CARBONDALE - Fern Italene Strusz died at the age of 94 April 18, 2013, in Oxford, Miss.

Fern was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Knights Prairie near Macedonia, the only child of John Evan "Shorty" Dale and Bertha Zella Moss Dale.

Fern graduated from Mount Vernon High School and SIU, where she met Charles Strusz, whom she married Aug. 10, 1940, in Mount Vernon. They remained together until his death in 1972.

Fern was creative, industrious, thrifty and persevering. She had marvelous taste and sense of style. Fern devoted her life to home and family. She enjoyed bridge, classical music and opera. Fern was a school teacher, had an antique shop and worked with Charles in many other endeavors. Fern traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. She maintained herself independently for four decades, after the death of her husband. She resided in assisted living during the last two years of her life. The family would like to thank her caregivers in Carbondale and Oxford, Miss., for their wonderful service.

Surviving Fern are her daughters, Stanley Boulee of Rome, Ga., and Fern Dale Budslick (Kim) and her husband, Alan H. Kim, of Carbondale; a son, Charles Strusz and his wife, Sharon, of Oxford; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

The family will host an open house honoring Fern's memory from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the home of her daughter, Dale Budslick. Those planning to attend may RSVP by calling 618-457-4890. "Fern Stories" will be welcomed and treasured. Fern's remains will be placed next to those of her husband, Charles, at a family service June 2, in McKinney Hill Cemetery.
