Clyde Calvin "Tyke" Arnold, age 76 of Broken Bow, died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Bryan LGH in Lincoln.
Tyke was born Aug. 16, 1936, in Broken Bow to Clyde Arthur and Vava Aleida (Condron) Arnold. He grew up and attended school in Broken Bow, graduating in 1954, where he excelled at football, basketball, and track. In 1984, he was inducted into the Broken Bow Athletic Hall of Fame, an honor he really appreciated. Tyke attended college at University of Nebraska Lincoln, HastingsCollege and Kearney State College.
He was united in marriage to Karen Kay Russell Oct. 14, 1956. To this union four children were born: Angela Kay, Clyde Edward, Russell Ray, and Pamela Jean.
Tyke farmed and raised cattle and hogs. He was in business with his father and mother at Clyde Arnold and Son, Feed and Elevator.
A huge passion of Tyke's was sports. He played town team basketball and softball for many years. He was coach to many baseball teams, from Pee Wee to Junior and Senior Legion. Tyke organized the Bow Elevator softball teams and coached several state championship teams.
In 2003, he was inducted into the Nebraska ASA Softball Hall of Fame. Tyke also enjoyed hunting, boxing, and being a Husker fan.
Family was the most important thing in Tyke's life. You could usually find him at one of his children's, grandchildren's, and great- grandchildren's activities. Tyke was generous and supportive not only to his family but to friends and anyone in need.
Tyke was a member of the First Baptist Church. He held several church positions and was currently the treasurer.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Arnold of Broken Bow; daughter, Angela (Scott) Ripp of Gates; son, Clyde "Tyke Jr" (Louise) Arnold of Broken Bow; son, Russell (Rose-mary) Arnold of Broken Bow; daughter, Pamela Gaston of Broken Bow; grandsons, Tyke "Bud" Arnold, Jess (Desiree) Arnold, Cole Arnold, Derek Gaston, Josh Arnold, Reggie Ripp, and Caleb Ripp; granddaughters, Andria (Stacy) Eddings, Jillian Arnold, Tara Arnold, Callie Arnold, Samantha Gaston, Tressa Ripp, and Rachel Gaston; four great-grandchildren; sister, Miche (William) Rowell of Broken Bow; brother-in-law, Kyle (Natalie) Russell of Broken Bow; nephews, Mike (Amber) Evans and John (Amy) Evans; nieces, Amy (James) Pelowski, Christine (John) Maessner, Cathy (David) Minnick; and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Jurdan Counts officiating. Govier Brothers Mortuary is in
charge of the arrangements.
