Son of Daniel Stanhope Pettis and Eva Leona (Smith) Scheel. Graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1943 where in 1941 he was R.G. on the only undefeated football team in the school's history as of 1966. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Cambria Flag Ship, Atlantic Fleet, and was a Tarot gunner with Torpedo Squardron 100. He married Olive Robinson Oct 9, 1948 in Jackson, Michigan. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters, 16 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. Prior to joining the navy in 1943 Elwne had his mothers surname of Smith. When joining the navy he decided to take his fathers surname of Pettis. Pete was a wonderful grandfather. He always told us your word is your bond, if someone can't trust your word then you have nothing.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
