Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Hillsborough, North Carolina, but reared and schooled in Alabama, he was a graduate of Alabama's Howard College and Cumberland University Law School in Tennessee. He became an attorney in Marion, Alabama, the mayor of Marion in 1856, and a state legislator in 1857 and 1858. At the start of the Civil War he joined the 4th Alabama as 2nd Lieutenant and went to the thick of the fighting at First Bull Run, where he served under Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee. Following a brief return home and a new commission as Major of the 25th Alabama, in January 1862, he fought at the Battle of Shiloh in Brigadier General Jones M. Withers' division. He was appointed Colonel of the 25th Alabama in September 1862, and, after fighting the Battle of Stone's River under Brigadier General Zachariah C. Deas, went on to the Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Atlanta campaigns. He was promoted to Brigadier General on July 26, 1864. Wounded in the leg at the Battle of Ezra Church on July 28, 1864, he followed General John B. Hood's army on crutches for its invasion of Tennessee. He stayed with the Army of Tennessee to its end in North Carolina, but he was not surrendered with it. He attempted to join forces still fighting in the West. After the war he held positions as Commandant of Cadets at the University of Alabama, Superintendent of the South Carolina Military Academy, United States Civil Service Commissioner, and an Alabama state senator. He later would died in Tuscaloosa.
