Rodney Robert Ryan, 88, of Timberville, died Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 29, 1920, in the Hepner area of Shenandoah County, and was a son of the late Robert and Minnie Baker Ryan.

He was the owner of Ryan's Orchards and was also a farmer and poultry man. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, having served in the 69th Infantry, where they met the Russians at the Elbe River. He was a member of the Massanutten VFW Post No. 2447 in Edinburg and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Shenandoah County in Edinburg, where he served as the Grand Patriarch of the state of Virginia. He was a charter member of the West Shenandoah Ruritan Club. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ (County Line) near Timberville and was a lifelong Democrat.

On Dec. 21, 1940 he married the former Virginia Barbara Hepner, who survives.

He is also survived by a son, Carroll Rodney Ryan and wife, Cheryl, of Timberville; a daughter, Nancy Lou Ryan Runion and husband, Derwood, of Timberville; four grandchildren, Michael A. Runion, Julie L. Runion Ritchie and husband, Kevin, Eric O. Ryan and wife, Emily, Patrick O. Ryan; six great-grandchildren, Brandon Lee Runion, Tanner Jordan Runion, Logan Scott Ritchie, Austin Cole Ritchie, Mia Rose Ryan, Asher O'Neil Ryan; a brother, Clovis Ryan and wife, Doris; a sister, Twila R. Clem and husband, E.W. "Pete"; a sister-in-law, Betty D. Ryan; and a half sister, Celia R. Guggeheim.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Berlin O. and Elwood K. Ryan, a sister, Geneva R. Branner, a half brother, Wilbur Ryan, and a half sister, Gladys R. Frye.

Pastors Anil D. Solanki and Kathleen Miko will conduct a funeral service Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's United Church of Christ. The casket will be closed at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
