Massacre Victim. At approximately 10pm on Tuesday, May 26, 1896, James Dunham, Hattie's estranged husband went to the McGlincy home and after grabbing an ax from one of the outlying storage buildings, Dunham entered the house quietly and crept up the stairs to the second floor and into the room Hattie was sharing with their 3-week-old baby. An argument ensued which awoke the maid, Minnie, who upon entering the room was hacked to death with the axe. He gagged his wife, then grasped her by the throat and dislocated her neck by a sudden wrench to one side. Dunham claimed six lives that night, her mother, Ada McGlincy, stepfather, Col. McGlincy, brother, James Wells, and farmhand, Robert Briscoe, the only individual he knowingly spared was his young son, who was later adopted by Ada's sister, Lucy S. Brewer of San Francisco. Brewer changed the infant's name to Percy Osborn Brewer. Across all six gravestones, the ominous biblical quotation "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord" stretches over the murder victims.
