George Barker, former city sheriff, died at the home of his sister, Miss Cora Barker, yesterday morning of an illness of four days duration. He was employed as a candy salesman at the time of his death.
Mr. Barker who held the office of sheriff of the county from 1916 to 1920, was the youngest officer to hold that office in the history of the county. At the time he was 24 years of age. He moved to Pittsburgh soon after completing his term here and had lived there until last December when he returned here.
He was born in this place May 25, 1891, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Barker. He was married to L. Gertrude at Pittsburgh on February 22, 1930.
Funeral services will be held at the home of Miss Cora Barker tomorrow afternoon. Services will be in charge of Reverend Berkheimer and interment will be made in the family plot in Newton Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, two sisters, Cora Barker and Mrs. Lena Benson of Emporium and two brothers, Merrick of Emporium and Edgar of Painesville, Ohio.
