Mrs. Grace Anderson, up until recently a resident for 32 years at Marcy Lane in Middletown, N.Y., passed away on Monday May 16, 2005. She had been fairly successfully fighting multiple myeloma cancer for the past five years, and a complication caused her unexpected death.
Grace Kathryn Looloian was born May 4, 1933, at home in the Presbyterian Manse at Stewartsville, N.J. (near Easton, Pa.), and spent her childhood in Stewartsville and in Plains, Pa. (near Wilkes-Barre). Her father, Reverend Mehran Looloian, a teenage refugee from the 1895 Turkish-Armenian massacres, in his first pastorate at Pleasant Grove, N.J., married the proverbial 'farmer's daughter', Kate Baldwin, who, of course, became Grace's mother. She had three older siblings, a brother, Dr. Wilbert Looloian, who predeceased her, a sister, Ruth Stasko of San Antonio, Texas, and a brother, Kenneth Looloian of Mountainside, N.J.
Grace worked as a registered nurse, at least on a part-time basis during most of her life, and she received her training at the Philadelphia Presbyterian Nurses School, from which she graduated in 1953. She kept up those relationships over the years, and their small class of 20 or so recently had their 50th reunion. While in Philadelphia, she met her husband-to-be, Donald Anderson, at a church function. Donald always said it was love at first sight, and they just recently completed 46 years of happy marriage. In their early years, Grace and Don lived in Matawan, N.J. and in 1973 moved to Middletown, N.Y. They have three daughters, Susan, Sallie and Jill, and five grandchildren, Matthew, Emily, Scott, Anna, and Jesse.
Grace was a devoted homemaker and did most of her nursing at Horton Memorial Hospital in Middletown. Not only was she a caregiver at home and in her occupation, but she also delivered Meals on Wheels, was active in a home demonstration group, and participated in numerous functions at the Webb Horton Presbyterian Church. She also had interests in the Middletown Garden Club and a hand bell choir. She was a prolific knitter, making sweaters and shawls for a host of relatives and friends. She did her creative knitting even while in the hospital, but perhaps more importantly, while watching her favorite Yankees. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and wife, and spread joy even while undergoing personal suffering.
Friends may call at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown, N.Y. on Friday, May 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
