Leah grew up in Ellwood City, PA with her parents (Adolph and Ann Fatter) and brothers (Jim, Eric, and Karl).
In 1962, she graduated from the Western Pennsylvania School of Nursing. In 1967, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was a Captain in Vietnam.
Before settling in Oregon in 1973, she lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area and Panama. In 1992, Leah earned a bachelor's degree in gerontology from the University of Oregon and married Larry Rose, joining his family of three children (Diane White, Deborah Triplett, and Rick Rose).
Leah worked for the Edgewood Nursing Home; South Lane School District; Home Health and Hospice through the Cottage Grove Hospital; and the Veteran's Administration Clinics in Eugene and Roseburg.
In 1991, Leah was diagnosed with breast cancer and helped found a breast cancer support group in Cottage Grove that continues to meet. In 2006, Leah learned that the breast cancer had spread. Over these difficult seven years, Leah valiantly fought the disease with the support of many close friends and family members. Her strongest advocate was her husband who accompanied her from the time when Leah had chemotherapy with his mother in 1991 until her death. Leah's women's Bible study group and her breast cancer support group (Bosom Buddies) were of special importance. She enjoyed frequent visits with her daughter, son-in-law (John Sarreal), two grandsons (Félix and Benicio Sarreal), and her Paraguayan daughter (Angelina Velazquez Mason) and her husband (Phil Mason). Most of all, Leah's faith and personal relationship with Jesus sustained her.
Leah Rose passed away at her home in Oakland, OR, on Sunday, April 28, 2013 in the company of her husband (Larry Rose) and daughter (Julia Sarreal) from complications related to breast cancer.
A joyous celebration of Leah's life will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Family Church in Sutherlin (878 W. 6th Ave.).
