Miss Cora E. Barker died early last Thursday morning in the Maple View Rest Home, Coudersport, where she had been a guest for the pst two years, and another chapter in the history of Cameron County education has been closed.
Miss Barker had taught in local schools for approximately 50 years when she retired in 1947. She began teaching before the turn of the century and she received permanent certification as a teacher on June 2, 1900, with certificate No. 6.
She was born September 25, 1876 in Shippen Township, the daughter of the late George and Martha Housler Barker, pioneer Cameron County residents. She was educated in local schools and began teaching while in her teens.
Miss Barker had taught in the Plank Road Hollow School, the East Ward School, several other Township schools and at the time of her retirement she was principal of the old West Ward School on West Sixth Stree. She taught principally in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
She taught three generations of many Emporium familes. Her former pupils will remember fondly her love of the English language, with an emphasis on poetry. they will, too, remember perhaps not so fondly her teaching of the diagramming of a sentence, altough it was of great value in later educational studies. They too will remember her discipline which was meted out with a stern mien, but awfully tender heart. They too will remember her love of community and everything that was fine and beautiful.
Miss Barker was a member of the First Methodist Church and the local branch of the PSEA.
She is survived locally by two nieces, Mrs. Roy (Mildred) Gates and Mrs. Thomas (Clarice) Cohick and two nephews, Neil and Ronald Barker. Several other nieces and nephews living in other areas also survive.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Coppersmith Funeral Home with the Rev. Samuel D. Register, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial followed in Newton Cemetery.
