William E. "Butch" Riley, of Republican City, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney, Nebraska following a very brief illness. Butch was born February 9, 1926 in Anadarko, Oklahoma, the eldest of five children born to William E. and Flossie (Edelman) Riley.

The family resided in the state of Missouri, until moving to Phillipsburg and Norton, Kansas, where he received his primary education. They settled in Republican City, Nebraska where Butch completed his education and graduated from Alma (NE.) High School with the class of 1944. Immediately upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and was sent to Boise, Idaho and on to California and Treasure Island for training. His ship carried troops to Okinawa. He toured many islands in the Pacific Ocean and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Butch was united in marriage to Wauneta Durnil on June 4, 1950 at the Methodist Church in Almena, Kansas and one daughter, Rochelle was born to this union. They spent the first twelve years of their marriage in Alma, Nebraska and then moved to Holdrege, Nebraska where Butch was the terminal manager for Consolidated Motor Freight until his retirement. In Alma, Nebraska he was employed by Cudahy Packing Plant and Coffee Transport.

Butch was a former member of American Legion and VFW in Alma and Holdrege, Nebraska as well as the Elks Club and the Eagles.

After his wife's retirement, they moved full-time to Harlan County (NE.) Reservoir and enjoyed spending winters in Texas and camping at Wilson Reservoir in Kansas. Butch was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing various lakes across the country and participated in many fishing tournaments. He also enjoyed hunting turkeys, deer and all other wild game.

Survivors are: wife, Wauneta Riley of Republican City, Nebraska; daughter, Rochelle Jurgens and her husband, Gary of Holdrege, Nebraska; grandsons: Alex Jurgens of Holdrege, Nebraska and Alberta, Canada and Taylor Jurgens of Holdrege, Nebraska; sisters, Shirley Fischer of Kearney, Nebraska, Mary Fecht and her husband, Ben of Amherst, Nebraska and Barbara Artz of Minden, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Jim Durnil and his wife, Kathy of Arp, Texas; sisters-in-law, Marlene Stevens and her husband, Steve of Bishop, California and Mary Lou Steinle and her husband, Duane of Topeka, Kansas and a host of relatives and friends.

Butch was preceded in death by: parents; grandson, Cody Jurgens; sister, Charlene Wolf, brothers-in-law: Eugene Durnil, Dean Wolf, and Lewis Artz; sister-in-law, Wanda White and her husband, Chester.

Interment was in the Alma Cemetery, Alma, Nebraska with military honors provided by the Fay Cady American Legion Post #118 of Alma, Nebraska in conjunction with the United States Navy Military Honors Team.
