Ruth (Robinson) Johnson
March 28, 1926 ~ March 17, 2022

Ruth Johnson, 95, of Elkhart, died on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at her home. Ruth was born on March 28, 1926 in Holindale, Mississippi to the late John F. and Magnolia (O'Neal) Robinson. On September 9, 1944 she married L.J. Johnson in Tunica, Mississippi. L.J. preceded her in death on August 22, 1991.

Surviving are her children: Larry (Toni) Johnson of South Bend, Tony (Susan) Johnson of Fishers, Indiana, Gary (Iris) Johnson of Elkhart, Marvin (Cynthia) Johnson of Elkhart, Ann Renee Calhoun of Elkhart and Michael (Charissa) Johnson of Rochester, New York. Five generations of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of close-knit nieces and nephews.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two children: Isiah Johnson and Robin Johnson. As well as her twelve siblings: Joseph Robinson, Harry Robinson, John Robinson, Isiah Robinson, Grady Robinson, Anne Robinson-Johnson, Blanche Robinson, Winnie Robinson-Kimbrough, Blanche Robinson-Bryson, Elizabeth Robinson-Scott, Rosalie Robinson and Lola Robinson.

Ruth attended grammar school in rural segregated Mississippi. Shortly after World War II, Ruth and L.J. moved to Elkhart making it their home. Though it was difficult for her to find employment during that time in history she was able to find work as a housekeeper for several prominent Elkhart families. She then went on to work for Vincent-Bach and retired after 18 years there. Ruth was a member of St. James AME Church in Elkhart, where she was part of the Stewardess Board for 20 years and served as President in the past. She was also ordained as a Deaconess at St. James AME Church.

A funeral service for Ruth will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 11:00 am with an hour of visitation prior to the service at St. James AME Church in Elkhart. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
