Frank R. (Nick) Gibbons, 72, of Sangerfield, a retired rural mail carrier and grocery store operator and well known sports figure died Wednesday, July 20, in St. Elizabeths Hospital, Utica.

He was born on the family farm at the intersection of Hanover Road and Shanly Road in the Town of Marshall, son of Edward and Mary Cleary Gibbons. He graduated from Waterville Central School in 1934where he was active in baseball. He continued playing baseball after graduationstarring as a left-handed pitcher for the Waterville Independents semi-pro team prior to and after World War II. During much of that time the team played in the Od Utica Press field and later in the Mohawk Valey Leadue.

Mr. Gibbons was an Army veteran of World War II. After the war he worked for the Latus Lumber Cmpany in Clayville until 1952. From 1952 to 1975 he operated Gibbons IGA Store in Sangerfield. He was a rural mai carrier from 1967 to 1978 serving WatervilleRD2 from 1976 to 1978. He married Helen Heckert in 1946 in St. Bernards Church.

Mr. Gibbons was a member of St. Bernards Church and Clifford J. Fulmer Post, American Legion. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Edward, and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Gibbons.
