Samuel Dalton Wood, 80, of Paris died at 7:26 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at McCuistion Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Wood was born November 6, 1920, in Cooper to Samuel David and Yula (Shippey) Wood. He graduated from Cooper High School and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1954. He married Mrs. Lelia Martha (Dillon) Tiemann, a widow with three children, in Alton, Illinois on June 2, 1951. She died August 25, 1988. He was a well-known pharmacist for 47 years, retiring in 1997.
Mr. Wood was a veteran of World War II, enlisting in the Navy in 1942. After training at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago, he was assigned as a pharmacist mate in the medical corps and served from late 1942 through 1944 with the U.S. Marine Raiders in the South Pacific where he participated in several conflicts. For his gallantry and bravery on New Georgia Island, Phm. Wood was awarded the Silver Star.
Surviving are two sons, David Wood of Paris and John Wood of Henderson and three step-children, 17 grandchildren, one sister, Margie Wood of Dallas and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ray, Paul, Glen and Joe Wood and one sister, Faye Wood Wilson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18, in Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Appleby and Dr. Gordon B. Strom officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
