By the practices of the day, Delona was required to place an ad in the local newspaper to see if Owen Jackson would respond. He did not. Delona Bare Jackson was granted a divorce from Owen Devero Jackson for desertion.

According to Rudy Parker Byrd, a resident of Clay County, Arkansas, her father hid Owen Jackson in the family barn and in the middle of the night, Owen Jackson crossed state lines into Texarkana, Texas. She said Owen was "wanted by the law." Owen lived the remainder of his life as Owen Lockman. He married and had four Lockman children with Opal Markham.

His children did not know he was Owen Jackson nor that he had been previously married. Owen Jackson died and was buried as Owen Lockman in Texas.
