Anna C. Toft was the second child of Marie Kristiane Lanvad Toft and Peter Hansen Toft, immigrants from Denmark. Anna was born on the South Dakota frontier, near the community of Plankington. She moved with her family near Vermillion, South Dakota, thento Laurel, Nebraska, and to Audubon County, Iowa, eventually settling on a farm 4 miles south of Exira.
