Charlene (Zornes) Perry, lifelong New Castle resident, died Tuesday, Apr. 30,2013 at the Heritage House Rehabilitation Center. She was 76.

Born in the Henry County Jailhouse. Perry was the daughter of Sheriff Charles Zornes and Jewell (Plummer) Zornes.

Perry's 25-year psychiatric nursing career included positions as charge nurse, director of nursing and nursing surveyor for New Castle State Development Center, Richmond State Hospital, Central State Prison and Winchester Hospital. She was a licensed massage therapist.

Author of three volumes of local lore entitled "Haunted Henry County I,II and III. Perry held a master's degree in history and was proprietor of the Catherine Winter's Bed and Breakfast during the early-1990's that she opened in the former Winter's home. She was considered a specialist in the 1913 Catherine Winter's mystery.

Perry is survived by two children, Scott C. Perry (wife Betty) of New Castle and Lisa M. Martin (husband David) also of New Castle.

She had 11 grandchildren; Tyler Thurman, at Nova Southwestern University Medical School in FL; Amy and Andy Thurman of Atlanta, GA; Benjamin Thurman (wife Jennifer) at William and Mary School of Law in VA; Alex Martin, at Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture, Christina Wernke (husband Nathan) of KY and Hayley Martin of WV. Also grandchildren Savannah, Kenny, Rhiannon and Gavin still reside at home.

Perry was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Charles Jr., Conley and Harold Zornes. She attended White Branch Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charlene Zornes Perry Memorial Scholarship Fund being established at the American Bank in New Castle.

Viewing will be from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 3 at the Main & Davis Funeral Home, Broad St. Chapel in New Castle and 1 hr. prior to the services at the church. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the White Branch Church of the Brethren with Pastor Brian Mackie officiating.
