Mr. Robert Donovan Jett passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013 after a series of declining health issues and complications from lung cancer.

Born in Washington D.C. on August 22, 1928, Mr. Jett joined the Marine Corps in 1945, starting his career with "The Commandant's Own" Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps. As a member of the only musical unit of its kind serving in the United States Armed Forces, he played for bond rallies, premieres, festivals, and historical engagements throughout the United States. During his succeeding career, his many duty stations included Pearl Harbor and all west coast Marine installations, Korea, the Philippines and Japan. He transferred to the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve in 1965, and finally retired in 1975 with 30 years of faithful service. Included among his military awards are the World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Prior to his enlistment, he attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring Maryland and Briarley Military Academy in Beltsville Maryland. He also studied music under a private instructor while working at the National Radio Institute in Washington D.C.

Following his retirement from the Marine Corps Fleet Reserves, Mr. Jett worked as a policeman for the Colonial Beach Virginia Police Department and the Indian River Sheriff's Department in Vero Beach Florida. Before his declining health, his hobbies included tending to his horse farm in Westmoreland County and attending Blue Grass Gospel sings.
Mr. Jett lived life very much on his own terms. He could be stubborn, impatient, and at times impossible to live with but these characteristics contributed to his memorable personality and we loved him despite these shortcomings. He stubbornly pushed forward through failing health, and resulting setbacks, hitting life's "reset button" many times and teaching us that life should be lived to its fullest with no regrets.
He is predeceased by his mother, Mrs. Grace Canon; his father Mr. Robert D. Jett, and a sister Mrs. Marjorie Stewart. His two surviving sisters include, Mrs. T.J. Cardwell (Tom) and Sharon Williams of Williamsburg; two sons Mr. Robert D. Jett III of Fort Lupton Colorado, Mr. Michael Jett of Colonial Beach and a daughter, Ms. Michele Jett Bondurant (Jay) of Williamsburg Virginia; Mrs. Patricia Rose, his former wife and true friend, who ensured his well-being for many years up until the end. A special thank you to the Colonial Beach Police Department and Rescue Squad for their tireless devotion and assistance; dear friends Diane and Andy Anderson, and Riverside Hospice.
Donations may be made to Colonial Beach Rescue Squad or Riverside Hospice. Private services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
