Evelyn Ina Montgomery, 96 was born to Drew and Ina Montgomery of Emporia, Kansas on August 15, 1914. She then grew up on ranches in the Flint Hills of Chase and Greenwood Counties before the family moved back to Emporia. After graduating from Emporia High School she earned Bachelors and Master's Degrees from Emporia State University. She also attended the Universities of Colorado and New Mexico, Middlebury French School and the Gran Universidad de San Marcos in Lima, Peru. She earned the PhD at Indiana University. Her earliest teaching was in high schools in Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. She then joined the faculty of Arkansas State University before moving to Berea College for twelve years. Her last assignment was to Texas Tech University where she was chairman of the Department of Anthropology, was an adviser to Mortar Board and Phi Ma Fraternity and in 1969 was chosen the Faculty woman of the year.

A granddaughter of English and Scottish immigrants she explored 26 countries, spent a summer with the Stone Age Yanomami Indians of Brazil and lived for a year in a remote village in the Andes Mountains of Peru. As a participant in the American Youth Hostels bicycle trips she was almost stranded in France by the outbreak of World War II. Later, she arranged home stay experiences for her students in (pre-Castro) Cuba and Mexico.

She was a member of several professional organizations, was the author of numerous articles and seven books.

She is survived by two nephews, Doug Montgomery of Council Grove, Kansas and Joe Montgomery of Russellville; and a niece, Sue Busch of Russellville.
