CHICOPEE - Ernest R. "Ernie" Abert, 80, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Wednesday October 2, 2002. He was employed for 27 years as a postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office in Chicopee Center and retired in 1984. He was born in the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee on June 4, 1922 a son of the late Max J. and Annie (LaBonte) Abert. He graduated from Saint Joan of Arc Grammar School and Chicopee High School Class of 1941. He moved to the Aldenville section of Chicopee in 1938. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II with the rank of Private First Class with the Headquarters Command in the European Theatre. He served in the battles of Northern France and the Rhineland. He received the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a communicant of Saint Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville and a member of the League of the Sacred Heart of the Church. He was also a member and twice past commander of the Aldenville American Legion Post 337 and a former manager of their Baseball Team. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Elder Council No. 69 on Granby Road in Chicopee and a former committee member and past chairman of the Aldenville Boy Scout Troop No. 138. He was a former Park and Recreation Commissioner for the City of Chicopee and a former member of the building committee for the Anna-Barry Elementary School in Aldenville. His beloved wife, Claire Y. (Couture) Abert was Called Home on August 5, 1995. He leaves his loving wife, Therese L. (Samson) LaRoche Abert. His loving sons, Mark E. Abert and his wife Pauline of Chicopee and Carl P. Abert and his wife Laurie of Aldenville. His loving daughter, Anne M. Aubin and her husband John of Aldenville. His loving step-sons, Philip A. LaRoche of Fairview and Robert E. LaRoche and his wife Nora of Aldenville. His loving step-daughters, Denise L. Drapeau and her husband James of Richmond, VA and Susan A. Laliberte and her husband Paul of Easthampton. His cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Michelle, Brian, Aleah, Rhea, Scott and Amanda. His cherished five step-grandchildren. His dear brother, Paul Abert and his wife Constance of Willimansett. His dear sister in law, Lucille Abert of Chicopee and his many dear nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his dear brother, Rene Abert who was Called Home in April of 2002. His funeral will be held Monday morning October 7, 2002 at 8 a.m. from the St. Pierre Aldenville Funeral Chapels, 13 Dale Street at the jct. of Grattan Street in Chicopee followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Saint Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street in Aldenville. His burial will follow the Mass at Saint Rose Cemetery on Olsen Street in Aldenville. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday October 6, 2002 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The funeral home parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear off Lafayette Street. Memorial donations may be made to Saint Joan of Arc-Saint George School Fund, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.

His son, Mark E. Abert

Mark E. Abert, 64, of Chicopee, MA passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 18, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Son of the late Ernest and Claire (Couture) Abert, he was born in Holyoke, MA on February 4, 1952. Mark was a proud graduate of Holyoke Catholic High School in 1970. He earned his B.S. from Westfield State College in 1974. Mark taught Science and Chemistry at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, Holyoke Catholic and Chicopee High School. He was an active and devout communicant of St. Elizabeth's Parish in Ludlow, MA. Mark cared deeply about the positive development of young people and was one of the longest serving Boy Scout leaders of Troop 180 in Ludlow, MA. Mark is survived by his wife of 39 years Pauline (Myers) Abert, two sons Matthew E. (Wendy) and Brian M. (Jessica) Abert and his daughter Michelle C. Abert all of Chicopee, MA. He also leaves his siblings Carl and Anne Abert both of Chicopee, MA; his beloved grandsons Connor and Andrew and his godson Scott. Funeral services celebrating Mark's life will be Monday, June 27, 2016 at 8:45 AM at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral Home, 64 Sewall St., Ludlow, MA followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Elizabeth's Parish, Hubbard St. Ludlow, MA. Burial will follow in St. Rose de Lima Cemetery, Chicopee, MA.
