Gene was the son of Loris "Bus" Alger & Mary (Mills) Alger, but was raised by his grandparents - Lewis Alby Alger & Nora (Edwards) Alger in Dickens, Iowa. He served in the US Army prior to marrying Patricia Ann Stewart on 19 Oct 1948. They lived in Dickens & Graettinger until moving to Ruthven in the early 50's.

Gene worked at the Ruthven Creamery & as a hired hand prior to starting at the Ruthven Co-op Lumber Yard, first as a yard man, then bookkeeper, & eventually Manager. He designed most of the new houses that were built in the area during his time at the Lumber Yard.

Family was very important to Gene. He was an avid reader - having read all of the westerns & mysteries in the surrounding libraries. Gene was a great cook - pancakes, steaks, & anything on the grill. Many of the neighborhood kids remember him for giving them their summer buzz haircut! He was a life-long Minnesota Vikings & Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it was worth listening to. He didn't often raise his voice, but if you got the "look", you knew you were in trouble!

He passed away in January 1998, leaving his wife, 2 daughters, a son-in-law, 2 granddaughters, 3 grandsons & at the time, 1 great-grandson. He always joked about two dreams that he had 1) Live long enough to be as much trouble to my kids as they were to me and 2) Spend all of their inheritance!
