Johanna Wilhelmina Sparnecht was born on 17 Jan 1812 in Bülkau, Hannover, Preußen, Germany, the daughter of Peter and Welhelmina Sparnecht. She there married Wilhelm Christoph Hildebrand on 28 Jan 1833 and their first child, a daughter (Sophie Catharine Antoinette ("Antonia")), was born on the day of their marriage.

After emigrating to America, Johanna's second child, a daughter also named Johanna, was born on 15 Feb 1837 in Newark, New Jersey and later that year (on 9 Oct) the child was baptized in Bülkau, Hannover, Preußen, Germany (the mother's birthplace).

In about 1845 Johanna and her husband, Wilhelm Christoph, and their family located to Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin, where Wilhelm practiced medicine.

Johanna no doubt accompanied her husband to Bremen during the years from 1853 to 1858, when he left Mineral Point and served as U.S. Consul in Bremen. After her husband's service in Europe, Johanna, her husband Wilhelm and their 24- and 22-year-old daughters were once again living in Mineral Point in 1860. Three years later (in 1863) Johanna's husband, Wilhelm, died.

By 1874 (at age 62), Johanna was living in Chicago, Illinois and as a 68-year-old widow (in 1880), Johanna was living with her married daughter, Johanna Peck (still in Chicago).

Johanna died on 24 Oct 1890 in Platteville, Grant County, Wisconsin and was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Platteville (her death record erroneously stating that her birth had been on 18 Apr 1812).
