Sergeant Benny L. Green, DSN 6857, received his commission and entered the academy for the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department on 02/12/1968. Upon completion of the academy he had the following assignments in these districts and specialized divisions through out his career. They were the 7Th, 9Th, then a detachment from the department to the Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.), Office of the Chief of Police, and the Narcotics Division. It was in this assignment that Narcotics Detective Green was awarded the Medal of Valor on 11/15/1976. Other assignments included the Gambling Section, Morality Section, and another detachment to the Internal Revenue Service-Investigative Section (I.R.S. Unit). On 09/21/1987 Detective Benny Green was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred to the 9Th District as a "Line Platoon Supervisor." During his career he was awarded 8 Chief's Letters of Commendations on 01/01/1974, 08/22/1975, 03/12/1976, 08/16/1976, 01/28/1977, 08/30/1978, 05/02/1979, and 10/22/1979. As previously stated, he was awarded the police departments highest award for unwavering courage in the line of duty on 11/15/1976 when he received the Medal of Valor. When Sergeant Green retired on 04/05/1988, he had completed 20.15 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Sergeant Green was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and attained the rank of Lance Corporal.


Benny Lee Green was born September 30, 1945 in Richland County, Illinois, the son of Robert L. and Eloise K. (Reed) Green. He married Mary Candice (Arras) on September 17, 1977.

Benny graduated from East Richland High School in 1964 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He then attained a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Maryville College in 1975.

Benny retired as a police sergeant from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department where he also worked as an undercover narcotics detective and patrol officer. During this time he was awarded the Medal of Valor and received 8 Chief's Letters of Commendation. He was very proud of being a St. Louis Police Officer. For five years he was the assistant director of security for ITT Financial Corporation. He then owned and operated Dream Fields, a sports complex in Sunset Hills, Missouri, where he enjoyed coaching softball and baseball as well as managing the fields. In 2011, he returned to Olney, the place he grew up, with his two faithful canine companions, Duke and Coco.

Benny was best known as a fun-loving, social, and loyal person. He enjoyed spending time with his sons, family and many friends with whom he loved to laugh with and "remember when". He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed attending their annual spring training and closely followed their season. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by two sons, Stephen Green and wife, Heather, of St. Louis, MO and Kevin Green of Claremont; two sisters, Juanita Small of Olney and Judith Kocher and husband, Jan, of Claremont; Nieces and nephews, Tonia Inskeep and husband, Ben of Claremont, Stacey Small of Carbondale, IL, Kerry Kocher and wife, Sabrina of Claremont, Shelley Small of Carmel, IN, and Melissa Smith and husband, Adam of Flora, IL; Great nieces and nephews, Mikaela and Raley Inskeep, Kadence Kocher, and Carson and Connor Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital or Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
