Doctor William Hildebrand was born on 12 Feb 1802 in Wolfhagen, KrSt. Wolfhagen, Hessen-Nassau, Preußen, Germany. His mother died at the time of his birth. His parents were Dr. Anton Friedrich Hildebrand (b. 4 Feb 1769 in Merxhausen; see Hessian biography for father at http://snipurl.com/26y4yc4) and Antoinette Elisabetha Ochs (b. 1779-1780; a native of Gudensberg). Wilhelm was baptized on the day of his mother's burial, 15 Feb 1802.

As a 33-year-old chemist, married to 23-year-old Johanna Wilhelmina Sparnecht and father of two-year-old Sophie Catharine Antoinette ("Antonia") Hildebrand, Wilhelm came to the United States in 1835 (aboard the Brig Emile Helene, arriving in New York on 21 July).

His and Johanna's second daughter, Johanne Pedrondine Hildebrand, was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1837 and in about 1845 the family located in Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin, where Wilhelm practiced medicine.

In about May of 1853 President Franklin Pierce appointed Dr. Hildebrand as United States consul to Bremen and he served in Bremen until 1857. While there, he lost the sight of one of his eyes.

He returned to Mineral Point and continued his work there as a doctor. In the spring of 1862 he went to St. Louis to have the eye extracted and returned to Mineral Point in about July of 1862, apparently well.

However, a tumor began to grow in the eye socket and he suffered much thereafter until he died on Sunday, 25 Jan 1863 in Mineral Point, Iowa County. He was buried on Wednesday, 28 Jan 1863 in the Greenwood Cemetery in Platteville, Grant County.
