Alfred K. Shughart, 61, of Carlisle, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at the Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Carlisle.

He was born April 8, 1944, in Carlisle, and is a son of Cordelia (Ripple) Cosner and Nelson Shughart, both of Carlisle.

Alfred was a 1963 graduate of Carlisle High School and served as a staff sergeant in the U. S. Army for more than seven years during the Vietnam era. During his time in service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device; and the Good Conduct Medal.

He had been employed by the former C. H. Masland & Sons and the Lear Corporation in Carlisle for 20 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Shughart. In addition to his parents he is survived by three brothers, Elwood Shughart, Anthony Shughart and Kevin Shughart, all of Carlisle; three sisters, Elaine C. Paulus and Shirley Buttorff, both of Carlisle, and Lynda Kay Shughart of Euless, Texas; several nieces and nephews; also Chad Gutshall of Carlisle, whom he helped to raise.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with the Rev. Keith A. Searfoss officiating.

Burial with military honors provided by the Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Opossum Hill Church Cemetery in Lower Frankford Township.
