Professional Hockey Player. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Richard was one of the most beloved hockey players of all time, mainly throughout Quebec and the rest of Canada. A great player in the NHL from 1942 to 1960 Richard was given the nickname, 'The Rocket' for his strong ability and determination. He was the first player to score 50 goals in 50 games, and also the first player to have 500 or more goals in a career. At 5'10, and 180lbs, Richard first played hockey in the position of Right Wing for the St. Francois-de-Laval from 1937 to 1938, St. Georges Norchet from 1938 to 1939, Verdun Maple Leafs from 1939 to 1940, Verdun Jr. Maple Leafs from 1939 to 1940, Montreal Sr. Canadiens from 1940 to 1942, and of course, the Montreal Canadiens from 1942 to 1960, along with teammates such as Hector 'Toe' Blake, in the QAHA, QJHL, QSHL, M-Cup, Hi-School, and NHL hockey leagues. Richard was the First All-star Team Right Wing in 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1955, and 1956, Recipient of the Hart Memorial Trophy fro 1946 to 1947, and a Member of the Second All-Star Team Right Wing in 1944, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1957. In 1960 Richard retired from hockey , and was honored in 1961 when he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961 as a Player. In 1998 he was also honored with a hockey trophy being named after him. In May 2000 at the age of 78 Richard passed away after a battle with cancer. He was given a state funeral in Montreal, which was shown on television across Canada. He was a true Canadian icon.
