Local legend has it that Elizabeth Jane Bellamy (Croom) died on her wedding night (11 May 1837) when her wedding dress caught fire. Her ghost still appears to this day. Elizabeth's husband, Dr. Samuel Bellamy, who never remarried, eventually committed suicide as a result of the grief he suffered from her death. According to the Tallahassee Floridian and Journal, three days after Christmas, on Dec. 28, 1853, Samuel C. Bellamy committed suicide by lifting a razor and slitting his throat.

In reality, Samuel and Elizabeth were married in North Carolina on July 15, 1834, three years before the date of the supposed Florida wedding. Their son Alexander was born in 1835, and in 1837, all three came down with malaria. Samuel recovered, but Elizabeth succumbed to the disease on 5/11/1837, with Alexander following her 7 days later at the age of 18 months.
