Gertrude married Harry Schecter, of Philadelphia, whom she had met because they had the same piano teacher.

Her father, Stephen Henry Baker, died when she was 12, so at 16 she left school to work and help support the family: her mother, her older brother Stanley, and herself. She used to tell us that she went to work in a plumber's shop, for $8 a week. All her life she regretted not having a high school diploma, so at the age of 80 she pulled together her determination, took local classes, and got her High School Equivalency Certificate!

In her 60's she began to teach adult education classes in weaving, an activity that she continued for many years in the towns of Lexington, Concord, and Bedford, MA.

She lived alone in her later years and mostly cared for herself until her death, at just shy of 93.
