Terry had been seven years a State Trooper with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol when he pulled over a pickup truck whose driver was driving erratically. After the driver could not provide a drivers license or registration Terry decided to search the vehicle. While doing so he was shot in the head by the driver, who then sped off in the pickup.
Terry survived his ordeal but was never able to return to police work. He suffered from seizures the rest of his life, dying from one after his car ran off the road.
