Abby Mae “Birdie” (Hood) Jarnagin was born in Storm Lake, Iowa on August 22, 1881. She was one of the younger children of John Henry Gray Hood and Harriet (Lewis) Hood. Because she was so small at birth, they supposedly put her in a shoe box and gave her the nickname of Birdie. Her father, who was born in Nahant, MA, was an artist who made his living painting signs, and the family moved around small towns in western Iowa after Birdie was born. Birdie’s mother died in childbirth when Birdie was only nine years old, and her oldest sister, Grace, assumed the role of homemaker of the family. At that time they lived in Neola, Iowa, but later moved to Panora.

On April 18, 1900, Birdie was married to Beryl Kent “B.K.” Jarnagin in Guthrie County. Three sons were born to them: Percy Earl, born 1902 in Panora; Claire H. born 1908 in Panora, and Max LeRoy born 1916 in Yale, Iowa.(Guthrie County). In March of 1917 B.K. moved his family to a farm in Logan Township, near Lohrville, Iowa, where they lived until 1939, when he and Birdie moved to Rockwell City. He was suffering from cancer, and passed away in 1942. Birdie lived in various places after B.K. died, including Lohrville, Sac City and Lake City, and she did some restaurant work. She liked to do needlework (embroidery and tatting lace) and crochet. She lived on her own until the last couple years of her life, when she went to a nursing home in Lake City. She passed away June 22, 1973, two months short of her 92nd birthday. Survivors included her three sons and their wives, her eight grandchildren: Earl Jarnagin, Eileen (Jarnagin) Meyers, Bonnie (Jarnagin) Miller, Joyce (Jarnagin) Irwin, Jerry Jarnagin, JoAnn (Jarnagin) McCrea, Nancy (Jarnagin) Johnson and Jim Jarnagin, and several great-grandchildren. Birdie is buried next to B.K. at the Brethren Cemetery in Panora.
