William Davis Azevedo, 88, of Lexington, died Sat., Feb. 21, 2004. He was born Nov. 2, 1915 in Berkley, CA. Mr. Azevedo was a graduate of Berkley High School and Merritt Business College. He was a World War II Veteran and First Lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry, serving from Feb. 1941 to Jan. 1946 in Alaska, France and Germany and received the Purple Heart. His career in transportation began in 1933 in Oakland, CA. Employment included Howard Terminal, Cowden Manufacturing, Ecklar Moore Express, Motor Freight Corporation, Bestway Express and Kuhlman Electric. Mr. Azevedo was a charter member of Crestwood Christian Church. He was a charter member and Past President of the Fayette Lions Club, Deputy District Governor of Lions Club International, Central Kentucky Traffic Club and Golden K Kiwanis Club. He was a founding member of the Lexington Chapter of Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity and served as its President. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Lutie Sharpe Azevedo; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary-Margaret and Jack Collier of Nashville, TN and Luanne Davis Azevedo and Jim Franklin of Paris, KY; his son and daughter-in-law, William Vernon and Beth Azevedo of Winchester, KY; six grandchildren, Lara Luanne Cross, Allyson Warner Cross, Lyndy Davis Franklin, James "Chip" Fredrick Franklin, III, Michael Vernon Azevedo and William Chase Azevedo; dear friends, Ann Thompson, Kathy Thomas and Patty Doyle. Mr. Azevedo was preceded in death by his parents, William Davis Azevedo and Emily Mello Azevedo Dutra and his stepfather, Anthony Dutra. Friends may call on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway. Services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Crestwood Christian Church with Rev. Collette Hensley officiating. Serving as casket bearers will be Dusty Bell, Tommy Porter, Jim Franklin, Jack Collier, Chip Franklin, Chase Azevedo and Mike Azevedo. Honorary casket bearers will be Dr. David McMurtry, Bill Worrell, Steve Worrell, Dr. Tim Scott, Dr. Rick Nallinger, Steve Case, Warren Foy, Chester Hager and Louie Mack. Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Crestwood Christian Church or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
