Luther was the first son of John and Lola Claghorn. He experienced high fever from ear infections as a child that affected his mental development. He never married. As a young man he worked on many diary farms in the Austin and Cabot areas, milking cows and living on the farms with small pay. He loved Christmas and birthdays. He also loved to give gifts as much as receive them. Even though he never married he always liked to have a girlfriend.

When he was no longer able to work, he lived in a nursing home in Benton. He enjoyed being more mobile than most of the residents. He also loved to play games such as dominos and cards. His sister Margie and family took the responsibility of overseeing his needs until his death. Harlan, Margie's husband, always said he received Luther as a wedding gift. Harlan was actually very good to Luther and only said this jokingly.

Luther was quite a character and had a good personality that made him very likable.
