Auto Race Car Driver. Before taking up stock car driving as a career, he as a moonshine runner for his family's business. He was well known by law officers who often chased him through the back roads of north Georgia when he was transporting the illegal liquor to Atlanta. With his driving skills, he and his cousin, Roy Hall, joined the stock car racing circuit. He raced from 1938 to 1941. Considered the most daring stock car driver of his day, during a Daytona race, he flipped his car twice but still came in fourth place. In 1941, he won the National Stock Car Championship after a win at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta. Tragically, the next day, he was shot to death by a family member during an argument over their moonshine business. In 2002, he and his cousin, "Rapid Roy" Hall, were among the first members inducted into the Georgia Racing of Fame.
