Swampscott, MA — Jeanne Phyllis Gray, 65, of Swampscott and Chicago, died Friday, April 19.
She was born to the late Everett and Rosamond Gray, on October 7, 1947, in Salem, Mass. Jeanne spent her formative years in Swampscott, Mass., and graduated from Swampscott High School in 1965. She later received her BA in History and Education from Salem State College in 1969 and her JD from the New England School of Law in 1976. In 1980, she married Paul E. Gallagher, originally of Randolph, Mass., and they lived together in Chicago, Ill.
Jeanne was a pioneer and recognized as one of the country's leading experts in the field of professional responsibility law and legal ethics. She began her legal career as an assistant bar counsel with the Board of Bar Overseers in Massachusetts. She then served as the Director of the American Bar Association Center for Professional Responsibility for over 30 years, and most recently as Associate Executive Director of its Public Services Group in Chicago. She was recently honored with the Charles W. Kettlewell Legal Ethics Award in 2010 for her longtime commitment to the legal profession. Jeanne's fierce dedication to her field was second only to the incredible kindness and generosity that she extended to all those she knew and encountered.
Jeanne was also an active member in her community and served on the boards of the St. Vincent DePaul Day Care Center and the Sheffield Neighborhood Association in Chicago. She loved to travel home to Swampscott and vacation on the island of Nantucket.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, Paul; her daughter, Brett; her sons, Sean and Brendan Gallagher of Chicago; her sisters, Dori Gray Rifkin and Beverly Gray Sverker, both of Swampscott; a brother, John "Jack" Gray of Lynn; and nine nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Bar Association Center for Professional Responsibility, the St. Vincent DePaul Day Care Center, or the Lincoln Park Community Shelter in Chicago.
Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 9 a.m. from the Solimine, Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott, at 10 a.m. Burial in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Chicago and is tentatively scheduled for May 11.
