Elizabeth died while at sea traveling from Virginia to Florida with her husband, Fleming W. P. Hixson and their young daughter, M. Elizabeth. According to a letter written by Fleming in Oct. 1838 describing her death and burial, she was buried on Stirrup Cay. Fleming wrote, "She lies near to the solitary grave of a British officer who was interred some years since on that little Island." That officer is Allan Bertram of the Royal Navy buried there in 1834 (Find a Grave Memorial #70295760). From the letter, it appears there was no marker. The stone in the photograph on this memorial is of Allan Bertram, but according to the 1838 letter from Elizabeth's husband, she is buried beside him.
