Richard W. "Dick" Pritchard, age 91, of Wind Gap, PA passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009 in Slate Belt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Washington Twp., PA. Born February 5, 1918 in Bangor, PA, he was the son of the late David W. and Mary Jones Pritchard. He and his wife, Bronwen, celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Dick graduated from Bangor High School in 1936 and served his country, as a 1st Sergeant, with the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific.
He worked as a knitter for the Kaiser Hosiery Mill, was a security guard for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service where he retired in 1983.
He was a little league coach in Wind Gap for many years and also served as a member on the Wind Gap Centennial Committee and Park Board. Dick was very proud of his Welsh heritage, and belonged to St. David's Welsh Society of the Slate Belt. He and his wife Bronwen loved to travel.
He was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Wind Gap where he was very active, serving as elder, clerk and Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Order of the Odd Fellows, Aluta Lodge #488, the Wind Gap American Legion Post #724, and the VFW Post#739 Bangor.
In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by one daughter, MaryAnn Schankel and her husband William of Pen Argyl, PA; one grandson, William Richard Schankel and his wife Kathy of Bethlehem Twp., PA; and one great-granddaughter, Kayla Marie Qi Schankel. He was predeceased by one son, Richard Jr., in infancy and one sister, Catherine Pritchard.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. in the Schmidt Funeral Home, P.C., 202 West St., Wind Gap with Pastor Kenneth Forbes officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday morning from 10:30 until time of service in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Wind Gap Cemetery, Plainfield Twp., PA.
