Laurence Gilbert, age 93, of Osage, died Friday, April 26, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage under Hospice of North Iowa.


Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Osage Alliance Church in Osage with Dr. Stephen Grunlan officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.


Laurence was born December 23, 1919, on a farm northeast of Osage, the son of Clarence and Elizabeth (Minnis) Gilbert. He graduated from Osage High School and attended Northwestern College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he met his wife, Sylvia Sperry. They were married on March 30, 1940, and moved to the family farm northeast of Osage. Laurence farmed and did custom combining and trucking until he retired. They later moved to Osage and recently were residents of Apple Valley Assisted Living. Laurence enjoyed playing the organ and singing. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing horseshoes. Laurence loved spending time with his family, and was well known for his sense of humor.


Laurence is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Osage; his children, Gary (Sandy) Gilbert of Osage, Marcia (Jerry) Sawyer of Plano, TX, Larry (Patsy) Gilbert of Visalia, CA, Carolyn (Robert) Knaus of Shawnee, KS, Marvin (Elijean) Gilbert of Kihei, HI, Sharon (Ed) Silverstein of Phoenix, AZ; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his sister, Ona Butler of Rudd.


He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mark; his sisters, Ruth Williams and May Nielsen; and his brothers, George, Alan, Grant, John and Max.
