Civil War Union Army Officer. He entered his Civil War service on September 17, 1861, when he was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company M, 9th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to 1st Sergeant of the COmpany two months later (November 17, 1861) he served at this rank through the regiment's particpation in initial operations in North Carolina, then was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on March 9, 1862 when Lieutenant Andrew Cause resigned. After two more months he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, replacing Lieutenant Jonathan Townley, who was transferred to Company K on May 16, 1862. Lieutenant Appleget served with his Company through it's operations in the summer of fall of 1862, then he himself was transferred out of unit in November 1862, when he was moved to Company A on the 24th. His rise through the ranks continued in March 1863, when Company A's Captain Joseph M. McChesney was transferred to the 1st North Carolina Volunteer Infantry as it's Colonel and commander, and Thomas Appleget was promoted to replace him. He led the Company for the next two years, leading them in actions such as the Battle of Drewry's Bluff (May 1864) and the combat on the Bermunda Hundred. On March 25, 1865 Major Samuel Hufty was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and Captain Appleget was advanced to Major to fill the vacancy. He would be the seventh and last officer to serve as Major of the 9th New Jersey Infantry during the war. He saw the conflict through to it's conclusion, and was honorably mustered out on July 12, 1865, having served nearly four years in the field, and rising from an enlisted man to third in command of the regiment.
