He was the son of Ebbie and Tillie (Scott) Sloan and married Vallie T. Green - 28 Nov 1912 - Lincoln Co., Tennessee. His obituary follows:

Lawrence W. Sloan, Prominent Citizen, Killed Wednesday -
Was Engaging In Overseeing Unloading Of Carload TVA Poles --

Lawrence W. Sloan was instantly killed Wednesday morning at 11:00 o'clock when the standards on one side of a carload of power line poles gave way unexpectedly. He was engaged at the time in overseeing the unloading. The accident occurred at Ardmore. The news of this tragedy was a great shock to the people of this county, for probably no man in the past decade had done more for his community or the county as a whole.

At the time of his death, Mr. Sloan was president of the Lincoln County Farm Bureau, Chairman of the Lincoln County Board of Education, and Chairman of the Lincoln County TVA Rural Electrification Project. He was active, energetic, and inbued with a community spirit, and as a citizen was a priceless asset to this county. Of fine build, robust and cheerful disposition, yet with it all a natural humility, never boastful, weighing all questions and never losing sight of the common good.

He was just reaching the prime of manhood, being only 42 years old. Besides his present important activities, he had been probably the greatest individual factor in the development of the southwest portion of this county, a section which has made more rapid advances than any other section of the county in the past fifteen years.

The schools of Lincoln County will suspend Friday morning, when the funeral services will be held at Taft, at 10:30 o'clock in the morning.

For several weeks Mr. Sloan had been active in promoting the TVA rural electrification project, one of the first in Tennessee county-wide in scope. He was also manager of the Taft Ginning Company, at Taft, where he made his home.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vallie Green Stone; three sons, David Sloan, University of Tennessee student, Sanders Sloan, and Joseph Sloan; and a daughter, Mary Sloan; his mother, Mrs. Tillie Sanders, also survives, as do two half-brothers, D. M. Sanders and Albert Sanders.
