Joe Bates, 51, of Chandler, Ariz., passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2013, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Joe was born on Feb. 13, 1962, in Ladysmith.

Joe was a well respected construction superintendant, leaving his beautiful work throughout Arizona. He would say that his best work is what he has left behind at the softball fields, within the players that he has coached over the past 12 years. His ability to create a strong family bond inspired all of those around him.

His greatest love of all was his wife and girls. They loved unconditionally and together lived life to the fullest.

Joe overcame adversity early in life and has been a friend of Bill W. for the past 32 years.

Joe leaves behind his wife and soul mate of 23 years Lisa; his beautiful daughters Erika and Makenzie; his parents Arlie and Mary Ann Bates; his parents-in-law Art and Millie McCormick; his brothers Don, Rodney (Annette), Rick, and Brian (Sherri); his sisters-in-law Suzie and Lori (Charlie); his nephews Todd, Jeff, Bradley, Zachary, Henry and Steven; his nieces Kristen, Michelle, Tracy, Tori, Lexi and Danielle; many close extended family members and countless friends.

Joe was thought of as a second dad to many. He was preceded in death by his late sister-in-law Debbie.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, April 26, at University Presbyterian Church, 139 East Alameda Drive, Tempe, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up for Joe's Family at https://www.youcaring.com/.joesmemorialfund
