1st Lt. Robert J. Hess, 26, of Fairfax, Va., died April 23, in Pul-E-Alam, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from enemy indirect fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Aviation Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.
"R.J." was born March 25, 1987 at Ft Rucker, Alabama to father Robert Thomas Hess and mother Laura Marie Hess. Our son was an amazing person and a wonderful and loving man. RJ's friends know him as a sweet, kind, genuine and compassionate human being. He had a wonderful sense of humor that could make anyone laugh. RJ was the kind of person that could brighten up a room and could bring a smile to everyone he met. He put his heart and soul into everything he did and was a natural leader and a great officer. RJ loved the Army and wanted to serve his country……RJ died living his dream.
1LT RJ Hess attended Robinson High School where he played football, lacrosse and was the captain of the swim team. He graduated from Robinson in 2005 and attended Old Dominion University where he also was a member of the university swim team. RJ joined ROTC his junior year and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army in 2010. RJ selected Army aviation as his branch of choice. He attended Basic Officer Leaders Course and flight school from June 2011 to November 2012. After completing pilot training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, he was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum in November 2012, where RJ was a UH-60M Blackhawk pilot and mission planner. He was selected to be part of his units advanced party and had just recently deployed to Afghanistan on April 11, 2013.
1LT RJ Hess's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the NATO Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Army Aviator Badge.
RJ's family will receive relatives and friends for a wake in remembrance of RJ at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home 9902 Braddock Rd, Fairfax, VA 22032 on Friday May 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday May 4 from 12 until 2 p.m.
1LT RJ Hess's funeral will be held at Memorial Chapel at Ft. Myer on Monday May 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Full Military Honors and interment at Arlington National Cemetery. Reception following interment at the Fort Myer Officers Club. All are welcome to attend this service burial and reception. Obituary information provided by Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home.
