Hill was educated at St John's College Cambridge where he came in touch with Methodists. He preached in the open air and was often assaulted. He built his own free Chapel, Surrey Chapel, London opened in 1783. Hill covered the country preaching to thousands. He opened children's Sunday Schools.They expanded until 3000 chilren were present.
He came to know Dr Edward Jenner and joined him in smallpox vaccination.
Two of his quotes are:-
"I have learned by experience that no man's character can be eventually injured but by his own acts."
"I do not want the walls of separation between different orders of Christians to be destroyed, but only lowered, that we may shake hands a little easier over them."
