Peter, a bricklayer by trade, was the son of Peter M. Glinn/Glenn and Mary "Polly" McDaniel. A recent history of life insurance in antebellum America shows that in 1852, he obtained a $1,000 life insurance policy on his "very valuable" assistant bricklayer, an enslaved man.

Peter enlisted and mustered as a Private into Company "A", 59th Virginia Infantry on 21 April 1861. He and other men of the 59th were transferred to Company "A", 46th Virginia Infantry on 13 August 1861. He was later promoted Corporal.

Peter and Mary had at least twelve children: Maria, Oscar, Adelaide, Mary Alice, Celeste, Robert, Sally, Elizabeth, Kate, Corrie, Adolph, and Edward (who was a major-league baseball player in the 1880s.) His wife and many of their children are buried nearby.
