STURGIS, SD - Betty Lou Douglas, 60, Sturgis, died from colon cancer Saturday, June 5, 2004, at her home in Sturgis. Following her diagnosis in March 2003, she courageously lived the next 15 months with grace, dignity and hope.

Betty Lou was born to Darel and Vivian (Nearhood) Abel on August 26, 1943, at Camp Gordon, Ga. With her father in the army she grew up at army posts in the U.S. and Germany. She graduated from high school in Copperas Cove, Texas, after which she accompanied her family on their second assignment in Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., she took a secretarial position at Fort Meade where she met Ronald Douglas. They were married on August 28, 1966, at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis. They lived in New York and Omaha before returning to settle in Sturgis.

Betty Lou was a loving and generous wife and mother. She devoted most of herself and her time to her family. When her children were young she often volunteered as a Mommy Helper at their elementary school. She also volunteered her time helping with Girl Scout troops and functions. Her love for children and teaching found her as a study hall monitor and frequent substitute teacher at Sturgis High School

Betty Lou also thoroughly enjoyed her crafting hobbies from cross-stitch to delicate blown egg decorating. She found crafts a relaxing outlet for her amazing creativity. That creativity also found a place helping behind the scenes with a number of Sturgis Community plays.

She is survived by her husband, Ron, of Sturgis, and two daughters, Brenna Meyer, of Spearfish, and Brittany Douglas, of Rapid City; mother, Vivian Abel of Sturgis; and sisters, Bonnie Alberts and Kimm Lischefska, both of Sturgis; and three grandsons, Bryton Douglas, of Rapid City, and Breckin and Bridger Meyer, both of Spearfish.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, June 8, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis, with Rev. Keith Nelson officiating. Interment will be private family at a later date. A memorial has been established to the Hospice of the Northern Hills or The American Cancer Society.
