He was killed at a checkpoint when a pregnant woman jumped from a car, screaming, and the vehicle exploded in a suicide car bomber attack. The soldiers did not know the woman was luring them into a deadly trap.

Born in the Philippines, he immigrated to the US with his mother. His late father, an Air Force veteran, was a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He graduated from high school in Ogden, Utah, in 1997, joined the Army a year later and became a Ranger in 1999. He planned to make the military a career. He had been assigned to Afghanistan twice, and Iraq was his third combat tour in two years.

Interment on April 16, 2003.
