Ambrose O. Burt
Ambrose O. Burt served in Co. B, 171st Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. He was mustered in on November 2, 1862, and was mustered out with his company on August 7, 1863, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The 171st Pennsylvania Infantry was recruited mainly from the counties of Snyder and Northumberland with detachments from Clearfield, Elk, McKean, Union, Montour and Butler. The regiment was organized at Camp Curtis in October and November 1862, and was mustered out in August 1863 at the expiration of its term.
Ambrose O. Burt was born in March 1845 in Potter County, Pennsylvania. His wife, Alice R. Robbins, was born about 1847 in New York, the daughter of A. and Sarah (Vale) Robbins. In 1880, Ambrose and Alice lived in Chemung, New York, with their three-year-old daughter, Ella. The family moved to Kalkaska, Michigan, before 1884.
Two children were known born to Ambrose O. and Alice Burt, Ella Mary, and Howard.
Ella Mary Burt was born in 1877 in New York. She married Harvey J. Taylor on September 18, 1901, in Kalkaska. Harvey was born on August 26, 1877, at Sparta, Michigan, to Loyal and Minerva (Tucker) Taylor. In 1910, Ella and Harvey lived in Lowell, Michigan. In 1920, they lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. By 1930 they had moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her widowed father lived with them in Wisconsin and Michigan. Ella and Harvey had one son, Stanley Taylor, born in 1907.
Howard Burt was born in June 1884 in Kalkaska. He married Ethel F. Jay on July 10, 1907, at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ethel was born about 1888 at Lowell, Michigan, the daughter of A.F. Jay. Howard and Ethel lived in Kent County, Michigan. They had one daughter in 1920, Dorothy Burt, born in 1911.
Mrs. Alice Burt died on September 6, 1899, at Kalkaska.
Civil War veteran Ambrose O. Burt died at the age of ninety-one at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harvey Taylor of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on March 19, 1937. He is buried beside his wife Alice in the Evergreen Cemetery at Kalkaska, Michigan. A family stone and a G.A.R. flag holder mark Mr. Burt's grave.
