New Hampshire Governor. Born the fourth of eight children to Irish immigrant parents, he graduated from high school and began working in a shoe factory nailing packing cases. He learned the shoe manufacturing business by working his way up the ranks and in 1925 he and two partners started their own shoe manufacturing business. The company grew to be the largest manufacturing employer in New Hampshire. He served two terms as Governor from 1937 to 1941. Although a Republican he supported much of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal policies. As governor he established the state police. After politics he founded a radio and television station in New Hampshire.
