Brevet Captain,Company G, 3rd RI Heavy Artillery, 21st Regiment, Reserve Corps. Capt. Blanding took several points of command with this regiment in the expedition against Port Royal and the advances against Charlestown, Pocotaligo, several Florida campaigns and the siege at Fort Sumter. The 3rd Rhode Island participated largely as an amphibious unit under the command of Brevet Brigadier General Charles T. Collins, who reported to General Thomas W. Sherman, the immediate command of the regiment was entrusted to Lt. Colonel Christopher Blanding. Jabez Blanding served with the unit for the entirety of the Civil War. The inscription on his stone reads:"Brevet Capt. Jabez B. Blanding: 21st Regt. Veteran Res. Corps. After serving with distinguished courage in the U.S. Army from the commencement to the close of the Civil War, he was basely assasinated while in the discharge of his Military duties at Grenada, Mississippi April 30, 1866 in his 25th year."
