Claude Everette Bennett, 87, of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at his home.

A native of Spartanburg, born December 11, 1917, he was the son of the late Bookter Benjamin and Iola Jane (Scott) Bennett, and the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He served as a Chief Petty Officer of the U.S. Navy, a member of Cannon's Campground United Methodist Church, and one of the first players of the American Legion baseball teams in 1933. He was a charter member of the Cannon's Camp Ground Ruritan Club with 30 years perfect attendance, was "Man of the Year" five consecutive years, and was president for three terms. He retired from Wakefield Buick.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, Ethel (Chapman) Bennett, he is survived by sisters-in-law Ella Bennett and Ruth Bennett, both of Spartanburg; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Hilda Chapman, also of Spartanburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers Walter, Paul, Wallace, Clyde (Penny), Charlie, and J. B. Bennett and sisters, Belle Wilkins and Myrtle Fowke.

The family received friends 10:00-10:45 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2005 at Cannons Camp Ground United Methodist Church. Funeral services followed at the church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
