Liberia President. Born in Newark, Ohio, he attended Ohio University and worked as a barber before migrating to Liberia in 1846. He became a successful merchant and soon entered Liberian politics becoming President in 1871. In order to build roads and schools, he travelled to London and negotiated high interest loans with banks. He agreed to the loans without consulting the Liberian Legislature. When the country received less money than expected he was accused of embezzlement. He attempted to extend his two year term, but the people rebelled. He was deposed from office and imprisoned. His death is a mystery. Some say he was dragged through the city and severely beaten, others say he escaped and drowned in the Monrovia harbor while trying to reach an English ship. In either case his body was never recovered.
